I know it's still summer time, but one can dream of cozy spots and soft blankets right?! There is something magical about walking into a home that smells warm, inviting, and lived in. While candles are wonderful they can be toxic if you aren't a careful shopper, one of my favorite ways to create a cozy atmosphere is with a simple simmer pot.
If you've ever walked into Williams Sonoma during the holidays and felt welcomed by the scent of oranges, cinnamon, and cloves, you already know the feeling I'm talking about. That warm, comforting aroma can easily be recreated right in your own kitchen using ingredients you may already have on hand.
A simmer pot is simply a pot of water filled with herbs, spices, fruit, and other natural ingredients that gently simmer on the stove (or in a slow cooker) to fill your home with fragrance. It's a beautiful alternative to artificial air fresheners and a lovely ritual while cleaning, crafting, decorating, or enjoying a quiet afternoon at home. Note: They will evaporate so you'll want to keep an eye on them.
How to Make a Simmer Pot
Fill a medium saucepan about 2/3 full with water.
Add the herbs, spices, and fruits that fit your mood that day
Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce to the lowest simmer.
Check the water every hour and add more as needed. Never allow the pot to boil dry.
You can also make these in a small slow cooker set on Low if you'll be enjoying the scent throughout the day.
Here are a few "recipes" to get you started:
1. Cozy Citrus Spice (Williams Sonoma Inspired)
This classic combination is warm, elegant, and perfect for fall and the holidays.
Ingredients
1 orange, sliced
2 cinnamon sticks
1 tablespoon whole cloves
2 star anise pods (found in the spice area, but often found at dollar stores)
1 teaspoon whole allspice or a pinch of powdered
1 sprig fresh rosemary
Water
The combination of citrus, spice, and rosemary creates that unmistakable boutique holiday fragrance.
2. Woodland Cabin
Perfect for winter evenings, reading by the fire, or snowy afternoons, or just pretending which is what I do in July and August!
Ingredients
2 sprigs fresh pine or cedar (food-safe and pesticide-free)
2 cinnamon sticks
1 teaspoon juniper berries
2 bay leaves
Small slice of fresh ginger
Water
The scent is fresh, woodsy, and comforting, a peaceful walk through an evergreen forest.
3. Garden Herb Retreat
Fresh and calming for spring or anytime you want your home to feel clean and peaceful.
Ingredients
Lemon slices
Fresh rosemary
Fresh thyme
Fresh mint
A few lavender buds
Water
This blend is bright, herbal, and reminds me of spending an afternoon in the garden.
4. Apple Orchard Afternoon
One of my favorite recipes for crisp autumn days, mmm and also pretending days!
Ingredients
1 apple, sliced
2 cinnamon sticks
1 tablespoon whole cloves
Small piece of fresh ginger
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (add near the end)
Water
The apple and cinnamon create the comforting aroma of homemade pie without turning on the oven.
Tips for Success
Fresh ingredients create the brightest aroma, but dried herbs and spices work beautifully too.
Leftover orange peels are perfect for simmer pots.
Refill the water throughout the day and enjoy the scent for several hours.
Compost the ingredients when you're finished.
Create a Cozy Ritual
One of my favorite ways to enjoy a simmer pot is to start one before settling in for an afternoon of card making, organizing the house, reading, or simply enjoying a cup of tea (my 3:30 in the afternoon daily chill time). It's a small act that makes home feel warm and welcoming.
Creating a cozy home doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. Sometimes all it takes is a pot of water, a few herbs and spices, and the willingness to slow down and enjoy the simple things.
What's your favorite simmer pot combination? I'd love to hear what scents make your home feel cozy!
